Amazing story of Saraswati Chandra's song!
The relationship
between the lyricist and music composer in the film is 'Choli Daman Ka Saath
Hota Hai' in film parlance. If there is proper tuning between the two, a
wonderful song is produced. Generally the composer creates the tune first
and the lyricist fits the words over it. This kind of thing is common in
our Hindi cinema. But does it happen every time? So no.
Sometimes the lyricist
writes his song and gives it to the composer and the composer plays the
lyrics. During these music sittings,
a few words are often exchanged between the lyricist and the
musician. Some songwriters are very particular about their words. It
often leads to arguments. A similar incident happened with a popular song
by lyricist Indeevar and music composer Kalyanji Anandji. What was this
song? What was the dispute? It is a very interesting story.
In the late sixties, director Govind Saraiya made a wonderful film based on Govardhan Ram Tripathi's novel 'Saraswatichandra'. The film was actually in black and white; The budget of the film was low but the film is still recognized as a cult classic. Actress Nutan and actor Manish played lead roles in this film. Even today the film is remembered for Nutan's amazing performance. All the songs from this movie are still loved by fans even today. This is the story of the making of a song in this film. The song was 'Chod De Sari Duniya Kisi Ke Liye....' Indeevar had already written this song. Musician Kalyanji performed it. When he heard the cover of this song, he liked it very much.
But after reading the
entire song, he was struck by a word in the song and insisted to Indeevar to
change that word. The word was 'Munasib'. The line was 'Chod de sari
duniya kisi ke liye ye munasib nahi aadmi ke liye...'. Lyricist Indivar
said that 'Munasib' is a very appropriate word. But this word was
bothering the duo of musician Kalyanji Anandji. He said, "Use some
other word here. The entire song sounds in pure palatial Hindi while the
lyrics sound Urdu. And here miss fit.” Indivar said, "No other
word can fit here. The word 'Munasib' means not possible, not appropriate,
not proper. The word "probable" will not work
here. Somewhere in the words possible is an assumption of
possibility. But that is not the case here. It's not right to ruin
your whole life for someone's love. This is the message I want to convey!”

Many words, many
dictionaries, many phone calls were made between the lyricist and the musician
for almost a week. But no other suitable word was found. Finally, out
of frustration, he decided to use the same word. But Indivar said, "Today
you are upset about the word, but tomorrow see, this song will become a huge
hit and no one will be offended by the word!" Singer Lata Mangeshkar
also confirmed this opinion and the song was recorded. The film was
released. This song became a huge hit. The film also became a super
hit.
Indeevar's words came
true. Lyricist Indeevar had told this story in an interview on Vidhya
Bharti. In this interview he mentioned two more songs which were composed
by Rajesh Roshan and which were written by Indivar much earlier. Rajesh Roshan
did it without changing a single word. And both those songs became
hits. These songs were from the movie 'Aakhir Q'. The song 'Dushman
Na Kare Dost Ne Woh Kam Kiya Hai Umrabhar Ka Gum Hame Inam Diya Hai' was sung
by Lata Mangeshkar and the second song was sung by Mohammad Aziz and the lyrics
were 'Ek Andhera Lakh Sitare…
