Padosan: The Song Mehmood Rejected Became a Timeless Bollywood Classic
Some of Bollywood’s greatest songs have fascinating stories behind their creation, and “Mere Samne Wali Khidki Mein” from the 1968 comedy classic Padosan is one of them. Today, the song is considered one of the most loved romantic-comedy tracks in Hindi cinema, but surprisingly, producer and actor Mehmood initially disliked it. Padosan , starring Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Mehmood, and Kishore Kumar, remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic comedy films. During the music sessions, lyricist Rajendra Krishan and music director R.D. Burman worked on a light-hearted song for a key romantic sequence. Burman composed the tune in Raag Bhairavi and created a demo version that he believed perfectly suited the film. However, when Mehmood heard the composition, he was unconvinced.
