This was the new formula for the success of 'Low Budget Family Entertainment'

Even though the lyrics were not ready, the composer didn't know what the lyrics were, and there was no idea who was going to sing the song, the shooting of the song was completed! You must be puzzled; How is this possible? But this funny thing is true. Composer Salil Chaudhary was giving music for the movie 'Rajni Gandha' in 1973. He sent the tune of the title song of the film to the director of the film Basu Chatterjee. After listening to this tune, one day Basuda's phone came to Salilada and he said, 'Dada apne this picture ka jo title song bana rahe hai wo thoda 14 seconds kam kar do' Salilada said to Basunda why? Agar aisa hain to aap 14 sec kad jada kar lenna! Salida was shocked by what Basud said. Basuda said, nahi dada, gana to humne pelehi shoot kar liya hai! Now it was Salilad's turn to be surprised. Jo gana abih record hi nahi hua wo apne pehle kaise shoot kiya? The real joke was that this song was not being sung by anyone but was going to be filmed in the background. Therefore, the song, which will capture the sentiments of heroine Vidya Sinha, was shot before the actual song was ready. Now the song had to be fitted within the time frame of the film and the dummy tune made by Salilad was 14 seconds longer!

Cinema was low budget so it was a star exercise. Now the real test was for lyricist Yogesh and music composer Salilad. Yogesh had to make another drastic change to the song and Salilad reduced the interlude pieces a bit. 'Adhikar Yeh Jabse Sajanka' was written by Yogesh and the song became 'Rajni Gandha Phool Tumhare Mahke Yunhi Jeevan Mein'. Not to mention, an amazing classic song was created! Basu Chatterjee's 'Rajnigandha' is an important film in many ways today. This movie is known as a classic movie.

This film on urban middle class life marked a new beginning for such films. The film initially had a star cast of Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore and Amitabh Bachchan. But Shashikpur himself told Basuda that the freshness of this film will increase only if this story is done with new artists. Later, they decided to make a film with Aparna Sen and Sameer Bhanja, but it didn't work out. Classical dancer Mallika Sarabhai was also considered by Basu Chatterjee but she turned it down as it was her MBA exam at that time. Finally, Vidya Sinha, who starred in an ad film by Basu Chatterjee, signed her for the role. This was Amol Palekar's first Hindi film. (Cinema)

He was then a busy actor on stage. At a film forum meeting, Basuda asked Amol Palekar for the role and he agreed. Dinesh Thakur, a seasoned actor of Delhi theater, played the role of the co-star. The music of the film was composed by Salil Chaudhary. Many of these songs include Yunhi Dekha Hai Yeh Jo Mann Ki Seema Rekha Hai...The song sung by Mukesh won a National Award. The shooting of the film was completed in just one month. (Cinema)

But no one was coming forward to take up the film and finally the movie was released in one print (Cinema) in Mumbai's Akashvani Theater and slowly the popularity of the movie grew through word of mouth publicity. Rajnigandha was released on 13 September 1974 and gradually the popularity of the film grew to such an extent that the film celebrated Silver Jubilee in many cities of India. After this, Basu Chatterjee's Chhoti Si Baat (1975) and Chitchor (1976) became super hits.

The seventies were significant in many ways. In this decade, along with parallel cinema, the production of content-rich 'low budget' films began. This movie in the same category was Basu Chatterjee's 'Rajni Gandha'. Based on the story 'Yahi Sach Hai' by famous Gujarati writer Manu Bhandari, the film starred Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha and Dinesh Thakur. It was released in Cinema and became a super hit. A new formula of success was created with quality storyline, amazing acting, melodious music and low budget family entertainment.
