These two films of Dilip Kumar unfortunately did not make it to the screen
Dilipkumar's birth anniversary In fact, birth
centenary. On this occasion I would like to tell you readers something
different, but I mainly remembered two films starring Dilip
Kumar. 'Chanakya' and 'Kalinga'. Dilip Kumar's true devotees must
have remembered both the 'unfortunately unreleased' films.
There are innumerable films in the history of the
film industry that have gone from being announced and hyped to being
completed. It's also a flashback. It is also a part of film
history. In fact, more films are shelved at some stage of production and
for some reason than are released. Money, time, energy, dreams, hopes and
expectations are forever wasted in it, it can never be counted. Along with
that, many good themes (story ideas), hopes of many (this film will give a lift
to your career) all go wrong. It cannot be measured at all.
Meaning, countless films are left to hit the screens. This focus on two
particularly interesting films of Dilipkumar.
'Chanakya' Dilipkumar has never done a heavy film
role, has always maintained his specialty of choosing films very carefully
(this part is an exception even if a few films fail) and never rushes his
work. At the same time, the number of Dilip Kumar's closed films and his
stories are also many. Even his directorial venture 'Kalinga' (1991) got
ninety-five percent progress, but the film unfortunately went into the box.
Otherwise, Dilipkumar's style of direction would
have been seen. Dilipkumar, Mehboob Khan, K. Asif, Amiya Chakraborty,
Bimal Roy, b. R. Chopra, Ramesh Sippy, Yash Chopra acted in the films
of quality directors, that is why Dilip Kumar would have been able to learn
from those directors. Several films starring Dilip Kumar (Raasta directed
by K. Bapayya etc.)
'Raasta' had Dilip Kumar, Anupam Kher, Jeetendra
and Sridevi in lead roles. The memory of the shooting reporting of
'Rasta' at Mehboob Studio still remains in my mind. Dilip Kumar and Anupam
Kher had a momentous scene on a grand divine set. That's how the progress
of the film was stopped. But B. R. A very different and
important film directed by Chopra, 'Chanakya' should not have followed the same
path. Producer and Director B. R. Chopra's 'Naya Daur' (1957),
'Dastan' (1972), as well as Dilip Kumar's film Mazdoor (1983), produced by him
and directed by Ravi Chopra.
Doubts about the success of the film 'Naya Daur'
were dispelled by the response of the audience. Some directors rejected
the theme of this film as it had no element of entertainment in the theme (it
was a documentary). But B. R. Chopra has executed the same theme
very skillfully and achieved success. The film stars Vyjayanthimala,
Ajith, Chand Usmani, Jeevan in lead roles. So Sahir's Geetana
O. P. Music by Nayyar. The songs from this movie are Yeh Desh
Hai Veer Jawano Ka, Mang Ke Saath Tumhara Maine Mang Liya, Jab Ude Ude Zulfe
Teri which are popular even today. But the films 'Dastan' and 'Mazdoor'
did not get the same success as this film. Dilip Kumar has a double role
in 'Dastan'. The film fulfilled Sharmila Tagore's desire to be Dilip
Kumar's heroine. But Bindu's role as a villain was more
impressive. (Dilipkumar)
B. R. Chopra later wanted to direct
'Bagbaan' (Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini) with Dilip Kumar in the midnight
role. It was his dream for many years. Also his dream was the movie
'Chanakya'. The first step for such a grandly ambitious film is the
character-wise photo session.
A whole day was taken at Mehboob Studio for
that. One floor was reserved. Renowned make-up artist Pandharidada
Jukar considered the look of the character, Dilip Kumar's personality, make-up
skills and the director's expectations as the photo session proved to be quite
impressive. At that time such exclusive coverage was mainly published in
Screen Weekly and then the news spread everywhere. This is the story of
1978. Dilipkumar's very different role was discussed on this occasion.
Since Dilip Kumar takes every film very
thoughtfully, it was felt that he might not have signed this film
easily. When such a big film is announced, the shooting actually starts
after a few months, so it felt exactly the same with this film. But even
after many months, seeing that there is no progress regarding this film, it is
gradually realized that the progress of this film is only and only for this
photo session. And that left the genuine movie buff disappointed. We
were expecting to see something different with this film, it will be sad to
realize that it is going away like this. Director B. R. This
would have been a classic film for Chopra too. But that unfortunately
failed to happen and the film only existed for this photo
session. Ironically, there was a discussion that Dharmendra was going to
play 'Chitragupta' in this film. It is also a success that the discussion
of a movie that was 'shut down' continues.
Remembering 'Kalinga' forever...
The world of Hindi cinema is a Jo Bhi Karo Shaanse
Karo attitude, this funda I have experienced many times live in shooting
reporting, film parties, glamorous premieres. So my memories of this area
are very different. One of the funda, wary/sparkling/famous moments,
big movie, more than that, its big moment has many and heavy memories, one such
moment of 'Kalinga'! (I remember the date 20 April 1991)
The most eye-catching thing when he got his
invitation was director Dilipkumar. My shock has increased. His
contemporaries Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Dev Anand always became directors
according to their respective styles. And also maintained. Raj Kapoor
is more versatile. Gurudatta is extremely sensitive. Dev Anand is
stylish and self-centered. Even though Dilip Kumar officially entered the
direction late, he gave many suggestions to the director Nitin Bose during the
production of 'Ganga Jamuna', and in later years he interfered in the direction
of many films. Was there really any truth in it? Perhaps, Dilip Kumar
felt that he wanted to discuss a scene with the director in depth and
interpreted it differently. In the world of pictures, what is seen is not
what is seen. Many of its meanings are drawn with anarchy convenience,
however. The stories and legends of the film world are often the same.
As the producer of 'Kalinga' is Sudhakar Bokade,
the film's timing and party in a five-star hotel in Juhu came true. Again
in Dilip Kumar's direction, it reached greater heights. I remember the
magnificent sets, the muhurat claps by Naushad, the powerful dialogues in the
muhurat scenes, huge claps, then hugs, the height, the food, the huge spread of
vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, the prices and the amount of scotch... all
that is easily seen in a film party... Two things this time were very liked and
therefore remembered.

For one thing, Dilipkumar had invited many of his
older generation co-stars, and as soon as Muhurta was free from the scene, he
went around the entire party meeting many of us, including film journalists,
and accepting greetings. Very impressed. I have a lot of gold, silver
and silver. The swimming pool and baqueant hall of that five-star hotel
was a very elaborate, magnificent, spacey, glamorous party, so it was not at
all remarkable that Dilip Kumar took the reins.
Dilipkumar along with Sunny Deol, Meenakshi
Seshadri, Raj Babbar, Shilpa Shirodkar, Raj Kiran played roles in
'Kalinga'. It should be said now, because it is well known that the film,
which is almost ninety percent complete, has gone into the bin forever. If
not, he would have come to the screen and seen what he did as director Dilip
Kumar. It is more important. A wonderful record remained. An
unforgettable movie experience was missed. A supernatural entry was left
in the history of cinema. Because there are so many memorable film
moments, this one was definitely different. Dilip Kumar is a never-ending
extraordinary, multi-layered journey. Such an actor and personality to
learn from. In that process, these are two different films.
