'Kaagaj Ke Phool' is one of the greatest classics of Indian cinema.

As much as the premier of movies, their anecdotes, stories, breaking news are more. Some have been in discussion for many years. But the color of a film premiere can be different. The prevailing anecdote or story of the premiere of Guru Dutt's 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' (released in Mumbai on January 2, 1959. 65 years old) at the Maratha Mandir theater is quite different.

Shammi Kapoor came out shouting very loudly and said, film ka hero kaha hai?…. Someone pointed at Gurudatta on this. On that Shammi Kapoor said, Woh Nahi Yaar… Asli Hero Murthy. Just then, Shammi Kapoor's eyes went to the idols standing in the corner and he went towards them and said, Tusi great ho yaar...Kya kamal ka kaam kiya hai... The cinematographer of this film V. K. This was an important moment for Murthy.

This is because the film was to present the tragedy of director Suresh Sinha (Gurudutt), the first CinemaScope film in our country and the result that director Gurudutt had hoped for. K. Murthy portrayed the character very creatively on the silver screen. The film was in Krishna Dhaval i.e. black and white format. But the color of the presentation on the screen was different. He is the important one. 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' produced by Guru Dutt Films is one of the great classics of Indian cinema. Unfortunately, the film was rejected by the fans. This masterpiece was a film depicting the private life of director Guru Dutt. Some of these events were actually in his life. As a result, it became more effective and Guru Dutt had an extraordinary affinity for the film. But the lovers were not interested in this matter of separate relationships.

Hence the film was a complete failure at the ticket window. Guru Dutt is believed to have got the idea of 'Kagaj Ke Phool' from Charlie Chaplin's film 'Lime Light' (1958). But the thing was independent. Accordingly, he asked Abrar Alvi to write the screenplay and dialogues. In this film, the sensitive director's ambitious film fails from the first show and on the one hand the director suffers emotional shock and affords it while facing financial loss. Such 'focus' was clear.

Directed by Guru Dutt 'Baaji' (1951), 'Jal' (1952), 'Baaz' (1953), 'Sailab' (1956), 'Arpar' (1954), 'Mr and Mrs 55' (1955), 'Pyasa' (1957). A very bold mover. The film stars Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Rehman, Minu Mumtaz, Veena, Mehmood, Baby Naaz and Mahesh Kaul in lead roles. Lyrics by Kaifi Azmi Music by Sachin Dev Burman. This film was in a new format i.e. cinemascope. The lens required for that was not available in India. It came from Hollywood's Twentieth Century Fox. Guru Dutt's vision was very big. He was more and more inclined to make the silver screen presentation of the film's themes more effective. He was also said to be a good technician. (movie)

The works he directed show that he had extraordinary aesthetic vision. He had the camera eye or vision that the director wanted. That's why many frames in his directorial films speak volumes, even the poster of that film features this feature. Posters of his movies explaining the personality of that movie. It should also be said that 'the director appears here'. The studio where he ruled the shooting floor, now director Suresh Sinha has no one to support him during the downfall. This film tells that in this entertainment field, everyone is a companion of happiness, no one is a guardian of failure. It is not surprising if this truth, which was told only sixty-five years ago, is being experienced more and more today, i.e. in 2024. On this selfish attitude it was said in 'Kaagaj Ke Phool', Dekhi jamane ki yaari, bichhe sabhi bari bari...

The central plot of the film revolves around a married director who unknowingly develops an attraction towards an actress while living in the company of an actress and then his tragedy. Director Suresh Sinha (Gurudutt) has a family consisting of his wife (Veena Sapru) and daughter Pammi (Baby Naaz). His special love for the girl. While working on the direction of the film 'Devdas', Suresh Sinha is trying to select the right actress for the role of 'Paro'. While in Delhi, he gives an umbrella to Shanti (Wahida Rehman), a school teacher who is standing at the bus stop in heavy rain. This is their first meeting.

When Shanti arrives in Mumbai, she goes to the studio to give that umbrella to Suresh Sinha. Suresh Sinha sees it and is convinced that she can play a role in his film. Shanti knows nothing about acting, camera movement, makeup. Suresh Sinha works hard on her. While shaping her as a talented actress, he gets involved in her. (Movie)

Meanwhile, many events take place. Shanti becomes a leading star while Suresh Sinha declines as a failed director. Once Suresh Sinha gets injured in a rickshaw accident Shanti serves him a lot. Shanti proposes a new film to Suresh Sinha to revive his career. Then the very self-respecting Suresh Sinha says, Muzme Keval Ek Cheez Bachi Hai, Mera Gaurav. There are many such sensitive scenes in the film. The song Wakt Ne Kya Kya Hansi Sitam (Rear Singer Geeta Dutt) is quite disturbing.

Guru Dutt's real-life wife Geeta Dutt and then Waheeda Rehman, he directed Raj Khosa 'C. i. D.' Brought to acting field from this film. Then, while working together, Guru Dutt's attraction to Waheeda Rehman was mirrored in 'Kaagaj Ke Phool', which was talked about since the film was in production, and then the whispers turned into a heated debate. The media of that time used to discuss such a relationship, but even more than that, the 'focus' remained on 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' being a unique work of art. Media grew over time. Gossip in the entertainment industry became mainstream. When Wahida Rehman was asked about Guru Dutt in a time when the image of actors was sloppy i.e. like cinematography, she answered very patiently and highlighted Guru Dutt's strength as a director. (Movie)

I saw 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' during my college days in the late seventies when it was released in a repeat run for a week at Moti cinema in South Mumbai. Notably, earlier I had seen Guru Dutt's 'Pyasa' (Nazla matinee) and 'Choudahvi Ka Chand' (Superla matinee). Matinee shows, repeat runs, street films and Sunday evening television were the only options available to watch films in my earlier era. But one could learn a lot about the old films through contemporary print, understanding the history of the film. Flashback, Wo Din Yaad Karo, Gujara Hua Jamana were used during that time. He established film culture in his own way. Had also read a lot about 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' and then decided to watch the movie.

Commercials in Moti Theater are over. It was completely dark. Censor certificate done. Initials were the initials of the film Guru Dutt. A few names are mentioned and the vast, deserted premises of a huge film studio appear on the screen from a very high altitude. The theme of the film starts appearing in the very first frame. With the statue of a ferocious bird in the premises of the same studio in the center, a thin Suresh Sinha is struggling to walk alone against the same background. In the very first frame we get involved in the thing on the screen. (Movie)

A telling scene in the film, Shanti agar tum actress nadbi ho to mai bhi director bura nahi', Suresh Sinha tells her. Suresh Sinha is left with nothing but Shanti's knit sweater…indeed a work that effectively focuses on the terrifying uncertainty of cinema. But the 'Indian film buff's mind is not then, now and never ready' to accept the reality of cinema, the perception or image that the world of film is all about glamour, gossips, light gossip and big box office figures has been established. She could not and cannot change 'Kaagaj Ke Phool'.

But that does not diminish the importance of such works of art. During the period of 'Paper Ke Phool', the definition of parallel films, new wave films was not in vogue. Mainstream films and stunt films (of Bhagwandada etc.) were considered the only difference. 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' is known as a classic film. And that is why it is noticeable that this film has been given constant scholarly focus for many years. This is a big income of this film. 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' was a commercial failure which led to a tragedy. He stood by Guru Dutt's decision not to direct the film again. After that, he 'appeared' as the producer and hero of the films 'Choudahvi Ka Chand' (1960, directed by M. Sadiq), 'Sahib Bivi Aur Ghulam' (1962, directed by Abrar Alvi). But the failure of a great piece of art should not have caused such a tragedy to a sensitive and well-versed director of the film medium..(Movie)

A brief focus on the film's 65th anniversary. If you want to create 'Paper Ke Phool' today? Extra-marital affairs, mutual attraction, contract marriage, divorce, second marriage, sometimes second divorce, sometimes the third marriage of a man are not only in the field of entertainment. It has grown in the corporate age. Sequels of 'Kaagaj Ke Phool' will be produced today. But they can be gritty. A lot has changed in sixty-five years.
