The ill-fated singer Mubarak Begum: Will we be remembered?
A person's life is so full of pain, failure,
contempt, humiliation, demoralization that no matter what they do, they are not
ready to let go of that pain and if that person is an artist, these torments
continue to haunt his sensitive mind for the rest of his life. The playback
singer Mubarak Begum had a similar experience. (Mubarak Begum)
In fact, today's generation is unlikely to know the
name of Mubarak Begum, but every music lover has heard the song 'Kabhi Tanhai
Mein Hamari Yaad Ayegi...' at one time or another. The singer who sang this
song was Mubarak Begum. The number of her popular songs is as many as can be
counted on the fingers of the hand. Twenty one years ago in Pune, our music
loving friends invited Mubarak Begum to organize a musical program for her. In
this program, Mubarak Begum publicly presented all her grief. He read out how
opportunities in life were taken away by the intrigues of the established
congregation here.
Born on January 5, 1936 in Rajasthan, Mubarak Begum
spent her childhood in Gujarat. His father was a good tabla player. This also
made her interested in music. But they were never able to take advantage of the
opportunity that came due to poverty and lack of education. Basically, such
opportunities were very few. He started singing for Hindi cinema in the late
forties. She sang for the first time for the movie 'Aiye' with music composer
Nashad.
He sang a song with Lata in this movie. In the fifties, the songs from the movie 'Daira' became very popular. Rafi's song 'Devata Ho Ke Sahara Maine Thama Hi Daman Tumhara…' was a huge hit. In Bimal Roy's film 'Devdas' (1955), he sang the song 'Wo Na Ayenge Palatke...' with music composed by Sachin Dev Burman. The name Mubarak Begum was prominently coming in front of the fans. He got the title song of Kedar Sharma's 1961 film Hamari Yaad Ayegi by accident. This song was originally to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar, but Mubarak got lucky with this song and it became his true identity. (Mubarak Begum)
'Kabhi tanhaiyo me bhi hamari yaad ayegi….' The
song gained immense popularity across India. Today only this song remains the
memory of this movie. Mubarak's career seemed to be going well. The song 'Muzko
Apne Gale Laga Lo E Mere Hamrahi' with Rafi from 'Hamrahi' became a huge hit.
But bad luck struck again. This popularity of Mubarak was eclipsed.
It was well advised that Mubarak Begum should not
get the benefit of this popularity at all. Mubarak Begum says in an interview,
“There was a big conspiracy being hatched against me and there was a systematic
effort to get me out of this industry! The song 'Pardesio Se Na Akhiya Milana'
from the movie 'Jab Jab Phool Khile' was recorded in my voice. Similarly, the
song 'Agar Na Mile Tum To Mai Ye...' from the film 'Kajal' was also recorded in
my own voice. But when the LPs of this film hit the market, the song came in
the voice of a different playback singer. This happened many times later in my
life. The recording was going on but the songs were coming out with a different
sound."
In the seventies, Mubarak Begum stopped getting
songs, gradually she started to leave the industry. His married life was also
not very happy. At the end of the eighties, he sang his last song in the movie
'Ramu To Hai Deewana'. After this, their cycles of poverty started. They had to
struggle for every penny. During this period, he literally had to live in a ten
by eight room in a slum in Mumbai. At that time, there were literally food
stalls. A songstress who once earned millions of rupees from a record company
was forced to eat two grasses. When actor Sunil Dutt got the news of Mubarak
Begum's condition, he started her karta pension. Also got a house in the
artist's quota.

Actor Salman Khan also helped. One of Mubarak
Begum's daughters was suffering from Parkinson's and she was spending a lot of
money on her illness. The boy was driving a taxi. Poverty was coming from
everywhere and there was no news of happiness from anywhere. Gradually a
negativity began to appear in Mubarak Begum. Talking to the media, they started
expressing bitterness towards the entire society. She started talking about
many musicians and singers. It was not possible to tell how much of it was a
joke and how much was reality, but his life had become a spectacle. Her
daughter passed away in 2015 and she left to meet Allah on 18 July 2016 at the
age of 80. Mubarak Begum left saying 'Kabhi Tanhai Me Hamari Yaad Ayegi'!
