"Shan turned forty-three years old.."
Continuity of success cannot be sustained by the good. Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' was a resounding success. After this great success, he made the movie 'Shaan'. While making this film, he was always burdened with the expectations of the audience as the comparison was going to be direct with 'Sholay'. While making 'Shaan', he took great care that nothing was missing anywhere.
The star cast, music, scenery, locations,
technology, cinematography were all ahead of time. But the fog of Sholay in the
eyes of the audience had not yet come down. They kept comparing Shaan with
Sholay frame to frame. Why did the audience not even think of 'Shaan' as an
independent film and criticized the movie by giving headlines that 'Shaan' is
not the 'Shaan' of 'Sholay'. The reason for remembering all this today is that
it is now thirty-five years since 'Shaan' was released on December 12, 1980.
At least today, can we neutrally think about this movie independently? If you look at it like that, the stunts in this movie are suitable for Hollywood movies. The complete makeover of Hindi cinema's wheelen is seen here. This movie was shot on glittering locations and grand sets like a James Bond movie. The completely bald villain resembled Ian Fleming's supervillain 'Blowblade' (Shaan).
The set of Shakal was the big attraction of this
movie. Some of this movie was shot on the island of Steep Home. (Exterior of
Jackal's hideout) Check out the main power locations in this movie. Casting was
impeccable. Amitabh, Shashi, Sunil Dutt, Rakhi, Parveen Babi, Mazhar Khan, and
Kulbhushan Kharbanda are too many to name. The music of the movie was Pancham.
(It got a Filmfare nomination). There was a trainload of modern techniques,
trick scenes, fight scenes. There was Johnnie Walker for comedy. The opening
fire scene was all new.
So where exactly did it go wrong? Comparisons with
either straight Sholay, Sholay's lingering hangover, Amitabh-Shashi's time-pass
in the first half of the film, and the lack of original revenge drama appeal
were cited as the main reasons. The songs in this were more popular than the
songs in Sholay. The titles were displayed in a unique way. The song 'Dosto Se
Pyaar Kiya Dushmanose Badla Liya' sung by Usha Uthap was amazing. Besides, the
songs 'Yamma Yamma', 'Pyaar Karne Wale Pyaar Karte Hai Shaan Se', Naam Abdul
Hai Mera', 'Jaanu Meri Jaan' were perfect for the movie. . (Shaan)

The dialogue delivery of Shakal aka Kulbhushan
Kharbanda, speaking with one eye narrowed, was suitable for his personality.
Shotgun Shatrughan Sinha's lofty dialogue was thrown together. When everything
was in order, even with the complete entertainment package, there was an
experience of 'Ahe Manohar Tari...'! Shaan would have been a hit if it had been
made before Sholay. But one thing is for sure, this movie has done a good job
on repeat run!
