How did SP Sinha become Shatrughan Sinha?

 


Shotgun Shatrughan Sinha of the seventies and eighties has a very interesting story about his film entry and his film nomenclature. Shatrughan Sinha completed his acting course from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. After completing his course in 1967, he came to Mumbai and started looking for work. His face was not meant to be a hero from any angle, so he had to struggle a lot. He initially played the roles of the protagonist and the villain. The Alumni Association was very helpful in getting him his first job.

One of his seniors sent Shatrughan Sinha to Gogi Anand. Gogi Anand was Dev Anand's nephew and was assisting Dev Anand. (The same Gogi Anand later directed Dev Anand's Darling Darling.) Gogi fixed a meeting between Dev Anand and Shatrughan Sinha. Dev Anand gave him the role of a Pakistani army officer in his film 'Prem Pujari'.


Dev Anand's 'Prem Pujari' was his debut as a director. Shatrughan Sinha was very happy because of this, the first film was also of Navketan banner. Shatrughan Sinha also felt that since Dev Anand often shoots his films abroad, he will also get to go abroad for the shooting of this film! But Shatrughan Sinha's entire shooting took place near Nashik and in Shirdi. As Shatrughan Sinha's role in this movie is very small, the shooting was completed in one day!

Due to the delay in the shooting of this film, Mohan Saigal's 'Saajan', the film he had signed before this film, was first released in 1969. Therefore, 'Saajan' is mentioned as Shatrughan Sinha's first film. Even though he first shot for 'Prem Pujari', his first release was 'Saajan'. In both these movies, Shatrughan Sinha's name does not appear in the initial credit titles, but SP Sinha's name appears there! Because Shatrughan Sinha's real name was Shatrughan Prasad Sinha. Instead of taking such a long name, he took the short and casual name SP Sinha.

Later, a friend of Shatrughan Sinha told him, "Hey, what is the name of the movie?" It doesn't sound like a movie name but it sounds like the name of some government bamboo! So you change this name.” At that time it was a fashion to take a film name. Jatin Khanna became Rajesh Khanna. Ravi Kapoor was Jeetendra. So Shatrughan Prasad Sinha alias SP Sinha also tried to change his name. But he was opposed from his own house. This is because Shatrughan Sinha belongs to an aristocratic family in Bihar. He had four brothers and these four brothers were named…Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna! So his brothers opposed the change of name to Shatrughna saying, "Oh there are very few families in the world where four brothers have names like this so please don't change this name!"

Respecting the request of his brothers, Shatrughan Sinha decided to use his own name, taking the name Madhale Prasad. Only he made a small change. The spelling of your name has changed slightly. Shatrughan instead of Shatrughan! He just changed the letters A and N to N and A and his pronunciation started to improve! And SP Sinha became Shatrughan Sinha. It is mentioned in his autobiography.
