Which producer broke the contract with Mala Sinha?

Mala Sinha, an audience favorite of the fifties and sixties, had a huge initial struggle in Mumbai as a big film producer had specially called her from Bengal and signed a contract with her for three films. But later her contract with her was canceled as her first film flopped! And Mala Sinha became virtually unemployed. A singer-actress helped bring her back on track and Mala Sinha's derailed career once again started to run wild! Who were the filmmakers? Why did they break the contract with her? This story is very interesting. (Mala Sinha)

Although Mala Sinha is originally from Nepal, she was born in Calcutta. She is a Christian. Her original name is Alda Sinha. But as she started acting in Bengali films from a young age, she adopted the name Mala Sinha for the film. She also used to sing on Akashvani in the beginning. She made her film debut as a child artist and became the heroine of Bengali cinema at the age of just fourteen. All was going well in Bengal. Her good looks also attracted photographers. A photographer from Bengal published a photograph of her in Cine magazine in Mumbai and it caught the eye of filmmaker Amiya Chakraborty. Amiya Chakraborty was a very big name at that time. It was he who directed Dilip Kumar's first film 'Jwar Bhata' and Dilip Kumar won his first Filmfare Award for his film 'Daag'.

When a great producer director like Amiya Chakraborty invites Mala Sinha from Calcutta to Mumbai, she is naturally lost and she leaves Calcutta with great joy. When she came to Maya Nagar, Amiya Chakraborty gave her an opportunity to work with Pradeep Kumar. But before that he also signed a deal with Mala Sinha to do three films. Mala Sinha was now on the seventh heaven. Because no Hindi film has been released, there were three film contracts in hand, that too from the production house of a great filmmaker like Amiya Chakraborty! So she was very happy.

But unfortunately her first film 'Baadshah' with Pradeep Kumar was literally a super flop. Amiya Chakraborty was also very surprised. Because then there was a glamor to his name and the film started to flop. This certainly did not bode well for them. He blamed the failure of this movie on his new actress Mala Sinha! And the contract of the next two films with her was almost cancelled. Amiya Chakraborty went on to make these two films but Mala Sinha was not the heroine of this film. Both these films were very popular. These films were 'Seema' by Nutan and Balraj Sahani and 'Kathputli' by Vyjayanthimala and. Naturally, Mala Sinha was upset because these two important films were lost and she thought of packing up and leaving for Calcutta again. In that way she also started the preparation. But on such a difficult occasion, Durga came to her! A Bengali producer director fired her and another Bengali producer director came to her rescue.

Durga festival is celebrated on a grand scale in Bengal. Durga Mahotsav was also celebrated with great gaiety in some of the Bengali communities who came to Mumbai. Shashidhar Mukherjee organized one such Durga festival in Mumbai. Many cultural programs used to be held in this festival. Geeta Dutt expressed her desire that Mala Sinha should act in a play at this function. Geeta Dutt also brought her husband Guru Dutt to watch Mala Sinha act in a Bengali play that way. Guru Dutt liked the role of Mala Sinha and her performance. And immediately he called her to his office and offered her the lead role in the movie 'Pyasa'.

Mala Sinha stayed here on his way to Calcutta in this manner. She stayed! She was from Mumbai. The news that Guru Dutt had cast Mala Sinha in his film reached Karnopkarni everywhere and she got the attention of film makers. Ramesh Saigal cast opposite Raj Kapoor in the film 'Phir Subah Hoagi' based on 'Crime and Punishment'. Similarly, Sohrab Modi gave her the heroine role in the film 'Nau Sherwane Adil'.

Balraj Sahani directed only one film in his entire career that was the film 'Lal Batti' also the heroine of the film was Mala Sinha. Malach was the heroine of BR Chopra's 'Dhul Ka Phool'. All these films were released in the year 57-58. The role of Meena played by Mala Sinha in the film 'Pyaasa' was also loved by the critics. Seeing this role, BR Chopra cast her in his film 'Dhul Ka Phool' and Mala Sinha's successful film career began with this film. Between 1958 and 1962, she appeared in many films, including Dunya Na Mane, Hariyali Aur Rasta, Dil Tera Deewana, Anpadh, Jahan Ara... In the sixties, she was a successful heroine. Mala Sinha's career got direction again with the role of Bengali drama performed during Durga Puja!
