Why did Yash Chopra hesitate while directing his film?

Director Yash Chopra, who has been changing the face of love stories in Hindi cinema since the seventies, is referred to as the king of romantic cinema. He changed the definition of love while making love movies. Yash Chopra became a successful film director in Bollywood due to his amazing direction, his performances, the passion of love in it, the music in his films, the shooting locations in his films. Their marks, trishul, wall, silsila. Films like Chandni, Veer-Zara were big box office hits. (Yash Chopra)

But did you know? At the time of directing his first film, he faced a huge challenge. He was hesitant to direct that film. They were pretty much on the back foot. But his brother BR Chopra encouraged him and stood firmly by his side. So he became a successful film director. The story of his first directional debut is very interesting. After playing supporting roles with his elder brother BR Chopra for several years, he got to independently direct the film Dhul Ka Phool in 1959.

This was his first film as a director. The story of this film was very bold for that time. The film dealt with the issue of extramarital offspring and the issues arising from it. This was a very advanced topic in terms of time. The issue of virgin mother was also in this. So for Yash Chopra, it was a challenge to direct this high-octane drama film. The film had a star cast. Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Nanda and Rajkumar! Reading the name Rajkumar, you will say where was Rajkumar in this movie? You are right. Earlier Rajkumar also had a role in this film. But later he was replaced by Ashok Kumar. What was the exact reason for removing Rajkumar from this film?

When Rajkumar signed the film, he thought BR Chopra was going to direct the film. But when he came to know that the film is not BR Chopra but his younger brother Yash Chopra is going to direct the film and this is his first film. He then told BR Chopra, “That's all right. I will do the film. But will you be present on the set?” Then BR Chopra said, “No! This movie is directed by my brother. I will not interfere in that.” Rajkumar was a little surprised to hear that and even expressed his doubt that Yash Chopra could direct the film. When Yash Chopra came to know Rajkumar's opinion about him, he told BR Chopra, “Rajkumar is right. Can I handle such a big subject? I doubt it too. Please watch this movie yourself or take someone else as the director. I will help them.” On this BR Chopra said, “Look, I am giving this film to you for direction after thinking a lot. Don't pay attention to who is saying what. Cinema is a director's medium. Now the hero of this film can change, the heroine can change, the composer can change but now the director cannot change under any circumstances. You are going to direct this film and I am sure you will direct it well!”

After hearing such a strong and clear opinion, Yash Chopra felt confident and prepared to direct but Rajkumar's displeasure remained. So BR Chopra took that important decision and he removed Rajkumar from the film and replaced him with Ashok Kumar. A virgin mother, a child born out of pre-marital relationship, a Muslim man taking care of this child are all interesting stories written by Pandit Mukhram Sharma. (He also received a Filmfare Award for the film.) Yash Chopra directed the film with great confidence and the film was a huge success. Rajkumar also attended the film's silver jubilee party and lavished praise on Yash Chopra and said that he had been misunderstood. Everyone forgave each other. And Yash Chopra gave Rajkumar an important role in this movie!
