Legacy: Dilip Kumar Rejected But Audience Accepted !
In the year 1997, the movie 'Virasat' (Virasat) had pleased
the lovers of both the class and the masses. A great film was made. The film
was a remake of a Tamil film. The story of the film was written by Kamal
Haasan. He himself acted in this Tamil film. The original Tamil film was titled
Thevar Magan. Kamal Haasan's father was played by veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan
in these Tamil films. The film had melodious music by Ilaya Raja.
The film 'Virasat' won many awards. The film also won the
National Award. When Kamal Haasan thought of remaking the Tamil film in Hindi,
he wanted Dilip Kumar to play the role of the father in the original Tamil
film.
A combination of Dilip Kumar and his son Kamala Haasan would have been great indeed; But Dilip Kumar showed his inability to act in the film. Because he was quite retired at that time. After Dilip Kumar's refusal, Kamal Haasan
Meanwhile, it was also decided that Bharathan, the director
of the original Tamil film, would direct the film. Bharathan wanted Rajkumar, a
veteran of Hindi cinema, to play the powerful role of Anil Kapoor's father. But
later due to some reason Bharathan himself walked out of this movie and then it
was decided that JP Dutta will direct this movie. But after talks between JP
Dutta and Rajkumar broke down, Rajkumar walked away from the film. At that
time, JP Dutta was busy with the production of the film 'Border' with his
significant other.
Musheer Riaz later suggested Mahesh Bhatt to direct the film. Mahesh Bhatt agreed but said that his daughter Pooja Bhatt will play the heroine. Similarly Javed Akhtar will write the dialogues of the film. But again due to some dispute between the director and producer, Mahesh Bhat walked away from this movie! And finally director Priyadarshan was mentioned there. Priyadarshan had previously directed two films in Hindi 'Muskurahat' and 'Gardish'. Both the films were not very successful. So he decided to make the movie 'Virasat' with his health.
He gave the important role of Anil Kapoor's father to Amrish
Puri. Amrish Puri gave a very strong performance in this movie. This film was
completed in 1996. And the movie was released on 30 May 1997. From the first
day, the film was crowded with fans. Tabu and Pooja Batra played the heroine
roles in this movie. Pooja Batra's voice was dubbed by Padmini Kolhapure. There
was also news that Juhi Chawla was also interested in this film.

This movie won many awards. Chitra's song 'Paili Chhun Moon Chhun Moon' won a
national award. Ironically, the Tamil version of the same song also won a
National Award at the time! The film was composed by Anu Malik and SP
Venkatesh. All these songs were amazing. The songs Dhol Bajne Laga, Taare Hai
Barati were well received.
Virasat received a total of 15 Filmfare nominations out of
which seven awards were won for Best Hero (Anil Kapoor) Best Actress (Tabu)
Best Supporting Actor (Amrish Puri) Best Villain (Milind Gunaji) Best Story
(Kamal Haasan) Best Cinematography (Ravi Chandran) Best Choreography (Farah
Khan) Virasaat is still fresh in the minds of the audience even though it has
been 25 years since its release today!
