Superhit remake of a flop movie by Subhash Ghai

 

The trend of remakes in Indian cinema has been around for a long time. The film 'Aurat' released in 1940 was remaked by Mehboob as 'Mother India' in 1957. There are three things in making a remake either the movie is an official remake or the movie is copied or the movie is inspired. Generally successful movies are remixed because there is a guarantee of success. No one usually falls into the trap of making a remake of a flop movie. But Showman Subhash Ghai dared to remake a flop film. Subhash Ghai made a bumper hit movie within a year by taking the story of the movie which could not survive in the theater even for a week. Not only did the movie become a superhit, but the actors also became superstars! It was a big deal. What was this movie? What was the exact story? 

The pair of dialogue writer Salim Javed broke up in the eighties. Later both started working independently. After that, Javed Akhtar turned to songwriting from 'Silsila' (1981) while Salim Khan turned to story/screen play. Salim Khan wrote the films Naam, Jurm, Khahar, Pukar, Patthar Ke Phool during that time. Some movies were successful while some were flops. A movie 'Phalak' penned by Salim was released on 1st April 1988. The film was directed by Shashi Lal Nair. The film starred Jackie Shroff, Mohan Bhandari, Shekhar Kapoor, Supriya Pathak, Madhvi, Vikram Gokhale, Kiran Kumar and Rakhi.

The plot of the film revolves around the lives of two brothers. It was a revenge story. It involves a lawyer brother played by Mohan Bhandari.. They both come together to avenge their father's death. The director held the screening of this movie in a theater in Santa Cruz. Famous Bollywood directors were present at this screening. Subhash Ghai was also present there. Everyone gave mixed reactions after the movie ended. Subhash Ghai met director Shashilal Nair and Salim Khan. To Salim Khan, he said, "The plot of the film is good. But the screen play is very slow. Dialogues are good. But the story has no flow. But still I like this plot. I can definitely make a good commercial mega hit movie on this plot!”  

Subhash Ghai did not stop there but started working on it immediately and completed and released the film within a year. This movie was Ram Lakhan! Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Dimple, Amrish Puri played prominent roles in this film. Both 'Phalak' and 'Ram Lakhan' had the same plot but the treatment was different for both the films. The lawyer brother in the panel was shown here as a police officer. But Rakhi was in the same role on both sides. Subhash Ghai gave each character a different color. Be it positive or negative. Each character was given a distinct identity. So we remember every character in Subhash Ghai's movies even today.

How did Madhuri Dixit enter this movie? Actually, Subhash Ghai was going to do a song in the movie 'Karma' with Madhuri but it was not possible. At that time he said that I will launch you soon in my cinema in a good way. But as the shooting of the film 'Karma' was delayed, her film 'Tejaab' was released before that and she was called a star. Ram Lakhan also benefited from this stardom. The movie 'Ram Lakhan' became a super duper hit. Subhash Ghai made a mega entertainment film on a large scale by taking the hit story of Salim Khan's flop film. Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit's career flourished with this movie. Jackie Shroff's art career also got a different footing. 

It proved that if a director has imagination, he can make any plot successful.
