Two remakes of the same movie: one a super hit and the other a super flop!

Remake is not a new concept in our Indian film industry. Remakes of many Hollywood films are done in Indian languages. Sometimes it is an official remake and sometimes it is also given a cute name of Inspire. Hindi movies are remade in the south, while many movies from the south are made in Hindi. Recently many movies from South are dubbed and released all over India and doing good business too.

Sometimes there are two remakes of the same popular movie and they are also released in the same year. In such a case, both
accuse each other of theft, but both of them are thieves in a sense! One of these films works and the other flops. Something similar happened in 1980. At that time, the titles of both the remake Hindi movies also started with the same initial. What was this movie? What exactly is happening?

In the year 1978, a Telugu film called 'Katakatla Rudraya' was released. The film was directed by Dasari Narayanarao and starred Krishnam Raju, Jayasudha in lead roles. This movie became a superhit there. Obviously, it was planned to remake it in Hindi. Prakash Mehra, the director of the film 'Mukaddar Ka Sikandar', decided to remake this Telugu film in Hindi and started preparing for it. Shatrughan Sinha was taken as the hero of the movie while Reena Roy and Shabana Azmi were the heroines. The name of the film was 'Jwalamukhi'. But another remake of the same Telugu film was being made in Hindi at the same time, this film was produced by actor Jeetendra and directed by Dasari Narayanarao. The name of the movie was 'Jyoti Bane Jwala'.

Jeetendra's heroines in these films were Mousumi Chatterjee and Sarika. Ironically, three actors from both the films were playing the same roles in both the films. The actors were Vinod Mehra, Waheeda Rehman and Kader Khan. The music of the film was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Jeetendra's 'Jyoti Bane Jwala' started late and got made earlier because of the discipline of filmmaking in the South. This movie was released on June 6, 1980. Released six months before 'Jwalamukhi' and became a super hit. It became the sixth highest grossing film at the box office collection that year. Prakash Mehra's movie 'Jwalamukhi' was released on 26 December 1980 and was a super flop.

As the audience saw the same plot a few months ago, they did not pay any attention to 'Volcano'. It is highly unlikely that anyone remembers this 'Jwalamukhi' today, but a song from the film sung by Kishore Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha 'Paan Bidi Cigarette Tobacco Na Sharab Hamko To Nasha Hai Mohabbat Ka Janab' was very popular at the time in Binaka Songs. was popular. The film had music by Kalyanji Anandji. Two such films on the same story had happened recently.

Akshay Kumar's movie 'Padman' was released in 2017. It was the autobiography of veteran social activist Arunachalam Murugantham. The film on women's issues did huge business during that time. Ironically, a film called Phullu' was released in 2016 on the same plot, but no one knew when this film came and when it went. In 2003, two films on the life of Shaheed Bhagat Singh were also released within a few months. The hero of one was Bobby Deval and the hero of the other was Akshay Kumar!
