Padosan: The Song Mehmood Rejected Became a Timeless Bollywood Classic
Some of Bollywood’s greatest songs have fascinating stories behind their creation, and “Mere Samne Wali Khidki Mein” from the 1968 comedy classic Padosan is one of them. Today, the song is considered one of the most loved romantic-comedy tracks in Hindi cinema, but surprisingly, producer and actor Mehmood initially disliked it.
Padosan, starring Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Mehmood, and Kishore Kumar, remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic comedy films. During the music sessions, lyricist Rajendra Krishan and music director R.D. Burman worked on a light-hearted song for a key romantic sequence. Burman composed the tune in Raag Bhairavi and created a demo version that he believed perfectly suited the film.
However, when Mehmood heard the composition, he was unconvinced. He felt the tune sounded too simple for such an important moment in the movie and instructed the team not to record it until further changes were made. Disappointed by the reaction, R.D. Burman reportedly crumpled up the music notes and threw them into a dustbin.
The story took an unexpected turn when Kishore Kumar arrived at the studio. Curious about Burman’s mood, he discovered the discarded notes, read through them, and instantly loved the composition. Convinced of its potential, Kishore personally persuaded Mehmood to give the song a chance, confidently predicting that audiences would remember it for decades.
History proved him right. Nearly six decades later, “Mere Samne Wali Khidki Mein” remains a favourite at musical events, radio shows, and retro Bollywood celebrations. The song’s charm, humour, and unforgettable melody continue to delight listeners across generations.
Stories like these remind us how many cinematic gems almost never made it to the screen. They also show how belief in creativity can transform a rejected idea into a cultural phenomenon.
